A lot of people still try to look for a miracle cure for their acne when the truth is there is no cure. The closest thing to an over-the-counter cure for acne is a treatment that uses proven acne medications. Two common ingredients in acne medications that seem to battle blemishes are benzoyl peroxide and tea tree oil. Which of these two ingredients is stronger?
Know the Facts
Acne treatments and remedies that use benzoyl peroxide or tea tree oil are a dime a dozen. There are numerous claims about acne medications and formulas from companies proposing to be the ultimate solution. Behind all the marketing and promises are studies and research that can help you understand what you need to know to erase acne.
The Power of Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is a popular medication because it is said to fight acne. To prove this point there was a study conducted by the Henry Ford Health Systems testing just how effective benzoyl peroxide might be. According to this study, 2.5% benzoyl peroxide has early effects on acne and had a high success rate of reducing acne.
The Strength Behind Tea Tree Oil
At the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences they set out to find an effective treatment for acne that would be well tolerated for nearly every skin type. In a double-blind clinical trial with 60 patients, they concluded that the topical use of 5% tea tree oil was a tolerable and effective treatment for mild to moderate acne.
The Battle Between The Two
The Department of Dermatology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Australia conducted a comparative study of tea tree oil verse benzoyl peroxide. In this single-blind study, 124 participants received either 5% tea tree oil gel or 5% benzoyl peroxide gel for mild to moderate acne.
The study reported that both treatments reduced the number of blemishes and had significant effects on acne. The onset of action with tea tree oil was slower, but the patients experienced fewer side effects.
Now What?
There are countless other studies that prove these ingredients both work well to improve your skin’s condition. Not every treatment will work the same for everyone. Choosing benzoyl peroxide or organic tea tree oil for your acne will be a personal preference. There are even products that combine the two ingredients in an attempt to eliminate acne faster.

A product that has both 5% benzoyl peroxide and 5% tea tree oil is Acsonix. Acsonix is a spot treatment designed for facial acne and body acne. For an acne remedy that utilizes both ingredients to clear your complexion you need to try Acsonix.
